Neon is the new black | AW18 Trend Alert
From the runways to the red carpets all we see is paintbox brights – on clothes, accessories and makeup. What we love about this trend is its versatility; you can go OTT or subtle depending on your mood and the occasion.
Take a cue from Prada, with just a line here and there they took a bright neon hue and subdued it with finesse.
On the other hand, Anna Sui played with vivid eyeshadow shades as if painting watercolour landscapes.
They say history repeats itself, and you better believe it - back in the 80s and 90s, paint box colours and neon hues were all the rage. It was neon everything – from baggy athleisure and fanny packs to eyeshadows and lipsticks.
This time around paint box colours get a contemporary fix with bright eyeshadows seen on Katy Perry, pop mascaras witnessed in Dries Van Noten’s Fall 2018 runway show and neon eyeliner seen on Halsey.
If you’re wondering how does a regular Jane replicate this trend, we have the answer – bright, bold eyeliner pencils! Or if you’re less of risk taker – bright nails in shades of azure and fuchsia. Make-up maestro to the stars, Patrick Ta told Elle UK, “A good way to wear coloured eyeliner is to wear it with purpose. Take hints of colour from your outfit or your jewellery and tie that shade back into your eyeliner, rather just wearing a random pop of colour.”
Feeling more confident, bolder even? Ready to take on some neon? Well, a little drama never hurt anybody, so add a stoke of electric blue or hot pink, but do so tastefully. We’re talking white inner eye highlights, neon eyeliners and bold lips. On the other hand, if you loved painting with watercolours as a kid, then don’t stop now. Create a whimsical watercolour look with splashes of vivid hues on your eyes; complete your look with a nude lip colour and pinup curls.
Experiment and play with colours, and don’t be afraid of neon hues and bright pop colours. However, if you need a little nudge, start with subtler shades like cotton candy pinks or lilacs and move on to bolder sunshine yellows, lime greens and everything in between.
