Common Skincare Myths Busted
When it comes to skincare, there are a lot of incorrect information floating around. We are busting some of the most myths so that you can give TLC to your skin the right way. MyGlamm separates the facts from the fiction.
#1 Exfoliate everyday
Over exfoliating can cause skin inflammation and makes it age faster. Stick to exfoliating 2-3 times a week.
#2 Wash your face multiple times a day to prevent acne
This can strip your face off moisture, making it look dull and tired. Washing your face twice or thrice a day is enough. It is important to wash your face at night to clean all the dirt and pollution that has accumulated throughout the day.
#3 Choose the sunscreen with the highest SPF
There are three types of sun rays that cause damage- UBA, UVB and UVC. The SPF of a sunscreen only refers to the amount of protection offered against UV rays that cause sunburns. For all rounded protection choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. The SPF required depends on your age and skin type too. The important thing is to keep reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours.
#4 You don’t need sunscreen when it’s not sunny
Your skin is always exposed to the sun’s UV rays and it’s best to wear sunscreen everyday even if the sky is cloudy or if you’re just sitting at home.
#5 You need to keep changing your products so that your skin doesn’t get used to them
Your skin can get acclimatised to certain active ingredients such as retinol but most antioxidants and moisturising products work well no matter how long you have been using them.
#6 You can use body lotion on your face
The skin on your face is a lot thinner than that on your body. Regular body lotion will be too heavy and may clog facial pores.
#7 You will have the same skin type all your life
Your skin type changes throughout your life according to seasons, environmental and hormonal factors. Your skincare routine will have to be changed accordingly.
#8 You can remove blackheads with scrubbing
Blackheads are formed when pores are clogged and dirt is trapped within the pore. They cannot be scrubbed away and need to be removed through a facial clean up procedure.
#9 Removing the pus from a pimple by popping it helps it subside
Popping a pimple only causes inflammation and scarring. It’s best to use ice or let the pimple subside on its own.
#10 Facial exercises keep your skin supple
Not only is there no evidence that proves this, but facial exercises, if done wrong, can actually make your skin more prone to wrinkled by constant stretching and folding. So either do it right, or don’t do it at all!
