DIY Pedicure and Foot Scrub – How to pamper your feet at home

Deck: Our feet do so much for us. The least we can do is pamper them once in awhile.

You’re on your feet all day – working, exercising, running errands – but can rarely find the time to book a pedicure appointment. Sounds familiar? We empathize. But we also know how rejuvenating and stress busting a long, warm soak and some scrubbing can be. And we’re in the mood to indulge.

When you don’t have a couple of hours to spend in a parlour, this step-by-step DIY home pedicure will leave your feet feeling just as refreshed, pretty and pampered.

  1. Soak

Get a wide basin or tub and fill it halfway with warm water. Add olive oil to the water and dip your soles in to soften your skin, a few drops of antibacterial essential oils (eucalyptus, lemongrass, or peppermint) for hygiene and a calming scent. No essential oil at home? No worries. Squeezing a lemon in the tub will work just as well. Submerge your feet completely and relax for 20 minutes.

  1. Wash

Take your feet out of the warm water and remove the dead skin and dirt on the surface using a loofah and a pumice stone.

  1. Scrub

Exfoliating is important. Sugar or salt are usually the base exfoliating agents in any homemade scrub. Blend them with olive oil to soothe the skin as you exfoliate. To pump up your DIY scrub with more benefits, use baking soda to clear up tanned skin, tea tree oil for an antioxidant boost, pureed strawberries for fresh, citrusy goodness, or coarsely powdered coffee for improved skin texture (or to be really honest, for the lingering coffee aroma). The best part about a homemade scrub is that you can create a whole new recipe for it using your favourite ingredients and oils. We say, go all Julia Child on your foot scrubs.

  1. Moisturize

Gently massage your feet and legs (up to the shin) using a rich moisturizer. This part is the sweet spot of this whole at-home pedicure affair. Moisturizing will keep your feet hydrated and glowing.

  1. Trim, shape and paint

Shape and then buff your nails with a filer. You could finish by rubbing some almond/olive oil onto each toe nail for a natural shine and to keep your cuticles hydrated. Or you could paint your toenails in the colour of your choice.
