Every lipstick lover is well-versed with the joys of adding new colours to their stash and guilty of hoarding stacks and stacks of them. However, as you go about hoarding these lipsticks, it is important to keep in mind that not every shade you buy will do it for you and might keep lying in your vanity, all wasted and ignored. That said, your best lipstick palette is out there somewhere, waiting for you. The key to this treasure? Pay due consideration to factors like skin tone, lip colour, and lip shape and you’d be gold! Here’s how you can choose the best colour range for you:

How to choose the right colours:
It might be worth knowing that brighter colours make the lips appear bigger while dark shades make them appear smaller. Similarly, matte lipsticks make the lips look thinner, while glosses and shimmery shades make them look fuller. The best lipstick is one that flatters your skin tone and lip shape without making the colour look washed out.

Fair

Go for bold colours like bright red (try Butterlicious in High Voltage), poppy pink and purple. Nudes pinks and light browns also go well with fair skin. However, steer clear from extremely light and frosted lipsticks for they might make you look washed out.

Medium

Go for warmer shades like nudes, corals (see all our favourite corals here), and orange. Punchy hues like pinks, plums, and mauves will also complement you well. However, extremely dark shades like chocolate brown and marsala are what should be avoided. Lipstick shades for wheatish skin can range from light colours to medium and deeper tones.

Dusky

Go for intense shades like wine, plum, berry (you'll love the Manish Malhotra Hi-Shine Lipstick in Vintage Wine) and classic red. Rich browns, mocha, and maroons will complement your skin tone. Also, you can play with bright reds and cool oranges if you seek some fun. However, avoid pale and light shades like pastel or baby pink, or extremely light nudes.

How to choose a nude lipstick

Nude lipsticks are something we all love. It’s a trend flattering to all skin colours, all seasons and the perfect way to make your lips look better at any given time. But there are some rules for wearing nudes. Too dark, and they may come across as brown, too light and you may look like The Walking Dead.

Fair

Focus on enhancing your naturally pink lips and choose nude lipsticks with pink undertones (Perfect Curves in Debutante). Lipstick with brown undertones should be avoided as they can make your lips look darker than their natural shade. Nude lipsticks with beige undertones can also work for fair-skinned people.

Wheatish

For those with wheatish skin tomes, nude lipsticks with orange and yellow undertones (Manish Malhotra Hi-Shine Lipstick in Sunset Sienna) work pretty well. Colours like caramel and dark beige will also flatter you really well.

Darker shades of nudes like chocolate (LIT Satin Matte Lipstick in Wild Wild Country) and mocha brown complement dusky complexions well. Choose nudes with rosy brown tints for the perfect look.
