Following a well thought out skincare routine can be therapeutic. It's almost a form of self-care for many to sit at their vanity and spend time massaging all the goodness into the skin. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate- just the basic cleansing, toning, and moisturising can suffice.

Cleansing the skin is imperative and to do so thoroughly, we'd recommend adding a cleansing brush to your routine. It's basically a facial tool that's meant for deep cleaning the face. But does it actually work? Also, how frequently can we use one?

We got in touch with Dr. Sushant Shetty, MD Medical Operations at Kaya Skin Clinics who is answering all the queries for us so that you won't have to Google them.

We've pretty sure that every skincare enthusiast has at least once considered getting a cleansing brush at some point in their lives.

What Is A Cleansing Brush?

Think of a cleansing brush as a cleansing device for your facial skin. Typically cleansing brushes are round and have different types of bristles that can be used for multiple skin types. The bristles on this product penetrate deeper into the skin and help get rid of the 3 Ds- dirt, debris, and dead skin. So yes, it's pretty awesome. You also get silicone cleansing brushes which are usually gentler on the skin.

So do they live up to the hype? Are they really necessary? Let's find out! Dr. Shetty is here to answer some commonly asked questions on cleansing brushes.

How Do You Use Them?

Are Cleansing Brushes Hygienic? How Often Can We Use One?

Cleansing brushes can do wonders for the skin. However, it's important that we clean the tool regularly before using it on our faces.

Talking about this, Dr. Shetty says, "It is important to regularly clean your cleansing brushes to prevent dead skin, oil, and bacteria build-up. As these brushes are directly used on your face, the cleaner they are, the better it is for your skin. Using dirty brushes can lead to skin irritation, and can also cause acne and breakouts."

"I recommend cleaning these brushes after every use. Along with the right frequency, ensure you soak your brushes in water and use a mild soap to remove any excess dirt and then air dry it before you use it again", he says.

Do They Really Have Anti-Ageing Benefits?

"There are no proven anti-ageing benefits by simply using facial cleansing brushes", adds the specialist. So, if you were looking to buy one for reducing early signs of aging, think again.

Can We Use A Cleansing Brush If We Have Acne-Prone Skin?

"People with acne-prone skin can skip using cleansing brushes as it can be harsh for the skin. We recommend you check with your dermatologist if you have never used one before and are planning to introduce it in your skincare regime", informs Dr. Shetty.

He also says that a cleansing brush necessarily doesn't have to be a part of your skincare regimen as excessive scrubbing can cause redness or skin irritation. So it's best to consult a dermatologist if you have sensitive skin because we're sure you don't want any harsh reactions to the tool.

But the burning question still remains... Are they really necessary? This would entirely depend on your personal choice.

Do you need them if you follow a religious double cleansing routine? No.

Are they beneficial to your skin? When used correctly, yes!
